James Chatham raised his family in Wilkes Co on the Brushy Mountains along the Vannoy Ridge Rd. James Chatham purchased land from the MARLOW family.
Until recent years, the Chatham property stayed in the family with the land descending to Thomas, Sarah, Charity and Rebecca. In later years, Sarah, Charity and Rebecca deeded their land to Thomas, so most of the land eventually was passed on to Thomas Chatham's heirs. Many of these Chathams are buried in the Younger Cemetery located off Vannoy Ridge Rd.
The name was spelled both Cheatham/Chatham in records. In later years the most common spelling in Wilkes Co became Chatham.
Henry Cheatham was born about 1815 and died after 1860 in TN. He is believed to have been the son of Kinchen Chatham and Charity Henline. He m. (1) Mary Ann Humphrey ca 1840 m. (2) Mary McDaniels 03 April 1860 Gilmer Co GA.
Mary Ann Humphrey died before the 1850 census was taken. She and Henry had two children:
Nathan C Cheatham was born Aug 05, 1841 NC and died Nov 11, 1917 in Ducktown, Polk County TN. He married Elizabeth Weaver daughter of Thomas Weaver and Nancy Hyde. She was born Dec 1848 in SC and died February 22 1919 in Ducktown, Polk County TN.
