Elizabeth Shew Ray was from the Moravian Tract in Forsyth, then Rowan County.
She is the mother of John Joseph Ray, son of Joseph. Joseph was son of Ambrose Wray and Susannah Lycan. Her father was Hans Lycan and mother Rachel Halsey. Susannah was born in the Jersey settlement.

The Lycan brothers Jacob and Hans, came down the great wagon road to Rowan County and are on first tax list for 1755. In 1759 they are on the milita list that was sent out against the Cherokee raids along the Yadkin River, during which Rachel's father was killed. His name was Daniel Halsey. The Halseys came from New Jersey.

Hans and Jacob's father was Peter Lycan from the Delaware Valley. Lycans had a farm on Penny Packer Creek near Philadelphia PA. They came to America in 1638 on the Kalmar Nyckel. That ship has been reproduced and is anchored in Christiana River, 3 or 4 miles from the mouth of the mighty Delaware River.

The Lycans are well documented in the Old Swedes Church Book. The church was dedicated in 1690. In the church book it reads: Michael Lycan brought 2 lbs butter, 2 doz, fresh eggs milk and gave 5 pounds cash for the dedication dinner. They occupied pew 5. If they did not buy a pew or pay rent on a pew, their family could not be seated in church. But the family activities centered around church. Hans and Rachel Lycan were married in *The Old Swedes Church, Gloria Dei in Philadelphia PA. They are listed in a book called Little Book of The Friends.

*Gloria Dei was built between 1698 and 1700 to serve a parish of Swedish settlers who lived along the banks of the Schuylkill and Delaware rivers. In 1845, it joined the Episcopal Diocese of Pennsylvania. The interior was renovated, and balconies were added. In 1942, Gloria Dei was named a National Historic Site.
